Krazy Castles have had a lot of email questions recently on what should be the cost of hiring a bouncy castle?.

So i have decided to breakdown what a typical bouncycastle hire firm costs would be, and how much they would need to charge just to break even.  The price is based on a standard children's 12ft x12ft bouncy castle.

This information may also help you decide if you would like to start a bouncy castle hiring business.

And for those of you out there that may think it's easy money……. ITS NOT ! 

You need to be physically fit with plenty of bending and lifting in and out of your van and you must be prepared to lift your bouncy castle that weighs on average 75kg up steps and sometimes through peoples houses.

Now i am going to breakdown the break even costs, please use this information as a rough guide and more costs may be occurred.

A average cost of a new UK made kids unit is around £900 including the shower cover, blower, pegs etc.

The average hire life of a commercial castle is 3 seasons, with most seasons lasting 28 weeks if the weather is good

So on that basis you need to earn £300 per season for 3 years to get your money back on the original cost. (£10.71 per hire)

Then we have the other costs like, insurance, test certificates, advertising, transport cost, fuel, telephone, book keeper, accountant.

So lets break this down:

So as you can see from the above figures above, the break even castle hire charge would be £43.21 per hire! It will also take you 3 years to pay for your original castle. So if anyone is charging less than this you may need to ask yourself how and why?

Its so easy in this economic climate to just pick up the local paper and book a castle hire from the cheapest hire company that you find!

However if you watch the bouncy castle video you will see the sort of inflatable you may receive.

If someone does deliver a bouncy castle with patches and delimitation and is really dirty….. BEWARE! and refuse it …..We will always try to help you out if this happens.

Never hire any castle from anyone that just advertises there business using a mobile phone number…..If there is a accident or problem could you get hold of them?

Lately in kent i have even seen locally a taxi firm delivery bouncy castles and a window cleaning firm ! (They must need some extra cash bless them) Will you be there no1 priority ?

Hire a bouncy castle from a established firm that runs all year round and has a registered business address.

BEWARE: A lot of new companies start up and undercut the competition then let you down at the last moment, this is the last thing you need with a group of 20+ unhappy children. So think carefully about who you hire from.

I would never suggest you hire from ANYONE that trades using just a mobile number alone!

You should also ensure that when you make your booking that the pictures on the website will be the actual bouncy castles that you will receive on the day and not a dirty, tatty, torn alternative.

This is very common as lots of people buy old 3rd hand bouncy castles from auction websites and then rent them out on a weekend for a bit of extra cash but show fake pictures on their websites taken from other sites.

To ensure your bouncy castle turns up on the day and it is a high quality inflatable, you should ask these questions:

How old is the bouncy castle? -less than 3 years is fine.

Are they manufactured in the UK to British Standard and have valid test certificates? Every bouncy castle should have a yearly test..like a car.

Can they give you any references of last years hirers? Again to check if they have anything to hide.

Does the company hire all year round? This eliminates the cheap traders.

Does the company have liability insurance and can they provide a risk assessment form if asked?

Many new start up companies use cheaper, non standard bouncy castles, imported from China, which may not be safe, or as high quality as the inflatables that are manufactured in the UK. I would avoid these companies!

Most castle hire’s wont think of all of these things when booking a bouncy castle, but if you do and you are reading this article, then it is definitely worth considering.

Remember it is always worth paying say an extra £5-£10 for a days hire from a reputable company with clean new inflatables that will be delivered on time, rather than a cheap worn out castle delivered 2 hours late or not at all.
